You know... when I was married, my
husband and I rarely, if ever, celebrated Valentines Day. I convinced myself that this was no big deal. The day is commercial and superficial and people shouldn't need a holiday to do something nice for their partner. But you know what? That was me rationalizing so that my feelings wouldn't get hurt when no flowers, chocolate, gift, date or card came home.
I'm now in a wonderful relationship and yes, we celebrate Valentines Day. Why? Why not?! So what if it's commercial. So what. Last year, he gave me a cute card and a simple pair of heart earrings and took me to dinner. At first, I resisted because I wasn't used to receiving such super sweet gestures. But... I loved it! I felt special.
This year, he got me chocolate and took me to an amazing restaurant. Yummy food and wine. It's not about the gifts or the day. It's about... I deserve to be treated with love and kindness. There is nothing wrong with receiving a gift and simply feeling good.
Allow yourself the pleasure of feeling good. Being happy. You're not too old... or married too long... to celebrate being together. Take the time to connect and do something fun. And if you don't have a partner.... then indulge in gifting yourself without judgement.
Your heart and soul deserve it.
